How Digital Art Shapes the Games, Animation, and XR Industries

From blockbuster games and animated films to immersive XR experiences, digital art plays a foundational role across some of the world's largest creative industries. That's why digital art classes have become an important starting point for aspiring artists.

Consider the scale. The global games market is projected to generate nearly $189 billion in 2025, up 3.4% year-on-year, while demand for immersive experiences accelerates across entertainment, education, healthcare and enterprise.

Despite their differences, these industries share one starting point. Before a character is animated, a game environment is built, or a virtual experience is developed, artists visualise ideas, define visual styles, and shape the worlds audiences eventually experience.

Ideas need shape before they can be built

Creative production almost always begins with visual exploration. Through concept art, visual development, environment design and character work, digital artists answer the questions everything else depends on: What should this world look like? How should this character feel? What visual style supports the story?

Genshin Impact's environments and characters didn't begin inside a game engine. They began as sketches, mood boards and concept artwork that defined the world before production teams started building it.

In Games

Before developers write code, artists establish the visual identity that makes a game recognisable — characters, environments, creatures, props, interfaces, lighting. With the global gaming audience expected to exceed 3.6 billion players, the demand for richer worlds and stronger visual storytelling keeps growing.

League of Legends carries more than 160 champions, each needing a distinct identity, costume design and animation style. Players rarely notice these decisions consciously, yet they're a major reason some game worlds stay memorable long after the gameplay ends.

In Animation

Animation is associated with movement, but artists define how everything looks first. Character exploration, storyboarding, background design and visual development set the colour palettes, lighting and world-building that guide the entire production.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the clearest recent example — its blend of comic-book aesthetics, hand-drawn technique and 3D animation was defined by artists experimenting long before animation production began.

In XR

XR isn't watched; it's experienced. Users engage directly with the environments around them, which makes art critical to whether an experience feels believable and intuitive. Artists build the virtual environments, interactive objects, avatars, visual cues and world-building elements.

Before medical professionals can rehearse a procedure in VR, someone has to create the spaces, equipment and interactions that make it feel real. The same applies across architecture, education and enterprise training.
