Dr. Lu’s dual influence—both at Hopkins and at NIH

Dr. Charles Lu’s work in higher education has left an enduring legacy of empowerment, equity, and access for historically underrepresented students. Through his roles at major institutions like Johns Hopkins University, Charles Lu Hopkins led with a clear vision: to create inclusive academic environments where all students, regardless of background, can thrive.

As Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lu was known for his student-centered approach. He championed first-generation, low-income, and LGBTQ+ students, launching initiatives that addressed barriers to academic and social success. Under his leadership, the university implemented expansive DEIA training programs, revised admissions and retention strategies to be more equitable, and launched inclusive scholarship pathways. For many on campus, the name “Charles Lu Hopkins” came to symbolize transformative advocacy and progressive change.

Dr. Lu’s impact was not limited to policy. He personally mentored students, hosted open forums, and worked closely with student-led organizations to amplify marginalized voices. His authenticity and availability made him a relatable leader whose efforts were grounded in the lived realities of those he served. He understood that true inclusion isn’t top-down—it requires partnership with the very communities institutions aim to support.

Following his tenure at Hopkins, Charles Lu NIH began applying these higher education principles on a national stage. Now serving as the Branch Chief for Strategic Diversity and Inclusion at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Lu is expanding his DEIA mission to include early-career researchers and trainees. He’s advocating for funding structures that prioritize equity, mentorship opportunities for emerging scientists, and outreach to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs).

Dr. Lu’s dual influence—both at Hopkins and at NIH—demonstrates his deep commitment to equity throughout the academic pipeline. His leadership ensures that students and scholars from all walks of life not only gain access to higher education and research, but also feel a genuine sense of belonging and support. From shaping inclusive campus cultures to national DEIA frameworks, Charles Lu Hopkins and Charles Lu NIH represent two pivotal phases of the same unwavering mission: to empower the next generation.
