Dr. Charles Lu’s work in higher education has left an enduring legacy of empowerment, equity, and access for historically underrepresented students. Through his roles at major institutions like Johns Hopkins University, Charles Lu Hopkins led with a clear vision: to create inclusive academic environments where all students, regardless of background, can thrive.

As Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lu was known for his student-centered approach. He championed first-generation, low-income, and LGBTQ+ students, launching initiatives that addressed barriers to academic and social success. Under his leadership, the university implemented expansive DEIA training programs, revised admissions and retention strategies to be more equitable, and launched inclusive scholarship pathways. Now serving as the Branch Chief for Strategic Diversity and Inclusion at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Lu is expanding his DEIA mission to include early-career researchers and trainees. He’s advocating for funding structures that prioritize equity, mentorship opportunities for emerging scientists, and outreach to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs).
